Calculation of water hammer in pipe flow
When a quick-closing valve in a line is suddenly activated, a pressure wave is generated which has a hammer-like effect on the piping system. The forces so produced exert an additional load on the system which may lead to structural damage.
The effective pressure elevation must be determined to check the required pipe class. If the maximum pressure reached (Joukowsky) can be mitigated by the impact number, the effective pressure rise can be reduced.
